Dmacks,
Over on the Talk:OpenDarwin page you asked about anti-spam measures for MediaWiki. I can't reply on that page because that page is protected (and thus can only be edited by those with administrator privileges). MediaWiki's Meta-Wiki has a page on the anti-spam features of MediaWiki. I personally can recommend the 'Spam Blacklist' extension. Once it has been configured with a decent set of regular expressions it cuts down considerably on the amount of spam edits showing up in Recent Changes. -- RichardP 02:07, 13 December 2005 (GMT)
- That sounds like a useful extension. I don't have sufficient rights on the machine hosting this wiki, but will try to drag those who do into this discussion. DMacks 03:15, 13 December 2005 (GMT)
- I see you're spending a bunch of time fighting an uphill spam battle. Over here, To avoid the spamming that's been going on, we've made changes:
- Only registered users can edit pages that have external URLs in them
- Other pages can be edited anonymously if a CAPTCHA is solved.
- Only the wiki administrators can create new accounts.
- It's unfortunate we had to resort to this, but it's really not too bad. Anyone can still edit any page that doesn't have an external URL, and any legitimate user can easily request an account to be created. We tried a bunch of less drastic stuff, and nothing less than this worked. --MrElvey 02:39, 21 June 2007 (CEST)
